Recipe: Mashuni (Traditional Maldivian Breakfast)

Mashuni or Mas Huni is traditional Maldivian breakfast you will fall in love with. Even the guests who don't eat fish eat this breakfast in Maldives every day.


The name Mashuni means fish and coconut (mas = fish, huni = coconut). It is tuna with fresh coconut, onion and lime.

Mashuni is served with roshi (chapati) and eaten by hand.


The coconut should be always freshly grated because dry coconut wouldn't taste the same. It woud be the best to buy whole coconut and grate it at home.


Maldivians sometimes add something green to mashuni for example collard greens.


 

Recipe: Mashuni

Ingredients

  • 1 can of tuna in oil or in brine

  • 1 cup of freshly grated coconut

  • 1 lime

  • 1 red onion

  • chilli pepper (optional)

  • salt


Instructions

  1. Cut red onion into small pieces. Add to the bowl and add salt. Mix well by hand.

  2. Add tuna, coconut, chilli (if using) and lime juice to the bowl.

  3. Mix well. There shouldn't be any big tuna chunks.

  4. Serve it with roshi (chapati) or in store bought tortilla.
