What to pack to the Maldives (and what to leave at home)

When people think of the Maldives, they usually imagine turquoise lagoons, white sandy beaches, and swaying palm trees. But packing for a tropical getaway like this isn’t always as simple as it seems. The climate, local customs, and the fact that many things can be bought directly on the islands all play a big role. Here’s a practical guide to what you’ll really need in the Maldives – and what you can safely leave at home.

Light clothing

  • loose and airy pieces (dresses, skirts, shirts, shorts)

  • T-shirts or tops made of natural fabrics (cotton, linen)

  • for men: lightweight shirts and shorts

Keep in mind that on local islands, modest clothing is required. Walking around the village in bikinis or see-through clothes is not allowed.

Swimwear

Definitely bring more than one swimsuit. You’ll be wearing them every single day. If you plan to snorkel a lot, a rashguard or swim shirt will come in handy to protect your skin from the strong sun.

Sunscreen (reef-safe if possible)

The sun near the equator is much stronger than in Europe. It’s really worth packing a high SPF 50 sunscreen, and ideally one that’s reef-safe to protect the corals. Good options include Bioderma, La Roche-Posay, or CeraVe.

Snorkeling gear

While most islands offer rental masks and fins, having your own gear is usually more comfortable (and hygienic). If you plan to snorkel every day, it’s absolutely worth bringing your own set.

Medicine and small first aid kit

On smaller islands, pharmacies are rare or may not exist at all. Sometimes guesthouses keep basic medicine for guests, but it’s best to be prepared. On Dhiffushi there is a pharmacy, yet I still recommend bringing essentials:

  • pain and fever relief

  • stomach and digestion remedies

  • gel for mosquito bites

  • band-aids and disinfectant

Travel Adapter

The Maldives use British-style Type G outlets. Some hotels, like Dhiffushi Inn, have international sockets so you won’t always need an adapter – but don’t rely on it everywhere.

What you can leave at home

Elegant evening wear

There’s no dress code in the Maldives (for dinner, restaurants, etc.). Nobody wears high heels or suits here – instead, you’ll enjoy barefoot evenings on the beach.

Too many shoes

Flip-flops, slides, or sandals are all you really need. Sneakers will only be useful for the flight. Since most islands are covered in sand, you’ll often find yourself walking barefoot.

Alcohol

Bringing alcohol into the Maldives is strictly prohibited, and customs will confiscate it upon arrival. If you’d like a drink, you can only get it at resorts or at floating bars near local islands.

Towels and hairdryer

Hotels and guesthouses provide all the essentials, including both bath towels and beach towels in the room. A hairdryer is also usually available.

Too much cosmetics

Keep it simple. Sun care and a face cream are enough. In the hot and humid climate, you won’t end up using much makeup anyway.

FAQ

Do I need travel adapter for the Maldives?

Yes, the Maldives use Type G (British) outlets. Some hotels provide adapters, but it’s not guaranteed, so it’s better to bring your own.

Can I bring alcohol to the Maldives?

No, importing alcohol is prohibited. You can only buy it at resorts or special floating bars near local islands.

What should I wear on a local island?

Outside the beach, you shouldn’t walk around in bikinis. On designated “bikini beaches”, wearing regular swimwear is allowed.

Packing for the Maldives is simple – the lighter your suitcase, the better. Focus on comfort, sun protection, and just the essentials.

A little tip: Don’t fill your suitcase too much.. Leave some space for souvenirs – the Maldives are known for beautiful hand-carved wooden decorations, local spices, and coconut products that make perfect keepsakes to bring back home.
